1. Red Feather Lakes Community Library Mission Statement
\nRed Feather Lakes Community Library provides a welcoming environment with
\nresources and programming for learning, enrichment, development for all ages and all
\nusers. We are actively engaged in community needs and positive collaboration.
\n2. Collection Management Goals & Objectives
\na. The goals of Red Feather Lakes Community Library regarding collection
\nmanagement are:
\n\u25cf To select and provide materials on the basis of quality, significance,
\nvalidity, timeliness, interest, and use for Red Feather Mountain Library
\nDistrict residents
\n\u25cf To provide materials based on both the actual and potential interests and
\nneeds of the community
\n\u25cf To assist both formal study and the encouragement of informal learning
\n\u25cf To provide access to a variety of options on matters of current interest
\nb. The following objectives have been adopted in order for Red Feather Lakes
\nCommunity Library to meet the goals set forth in this Policy:
\n\u25cf Serve the entire population of the District, both actual and potential, by
\nobtaining, organizing, and providing free access to information in a variety
\nof formats. Materials may be available in and through the Library or
\navailable online through interlibrary loan via library cooperative or
\ncommercial arrangements.
\n\u25cf Evaluate new items and formats as they become available in order to
\nkeep information available to the community up-to-date and integrate them
\nas demand warrants and budget allows.
\n3. General Principles Guiding Collection Management
\na. Red Feather Lakes Community Library subscribes to the material selection
\nprinciples recommended by the American Library Association\u2019s (ALA) Library Bill
\nRed Feather Mountain Library District Collection Management Policy Page 3
\nof Rights (Appendix A), Freedom to Read (Appendix B), and Freedom to View
\nStatements along with the ALA Code of Ethics (Appendix C).
\nb. Within the above mentioned principles, the Library will provide a wide range of
\nmaterials and material formats for users of all ages, all educational levels, all
\nlevels of interest or skill, and all socio-economic backgrounds. These guidelines
\nwere created with users as the main focus. Emphasis is given as well for local
\nand Colorado history, specific individual requests, and items of perceived interest
\nor impact within the community.
\n4. Responsibility for Selection
\nThe ultimate responsibility for the selection of materials for the Library is held by the
\nLibrary Director. The quantity of materials purchased is based on the current year\u2019s
\ncollection and budget as directed by the Red Feather Mountain Library District Board of
\nTrustees.
\n5. Selection
\na. The Red Feather Lakes Community Library selects materials in accordance with
\nguidelines set forth by the American Library Association. Links to such guidelines
\ncan be found in References (section 9) of this Policy.
\nb. The Library does not censor or sanction particular beliefs or views.
\nc. Selection principles take into account inclusive not exclusive ideas, diverse
\nopinion, and tolerance of different points of view.
\nd. The selection of materials is governed by the Library\u2019s mission statement, the
\npresent and future needs of the community, collaboration with other libraries
\nwithin the state of Colorado and their catalogs, and the limitations of space and
\nbudget within the Library.
\ne. The Library Director may also consider suggestions from Library staff members
\nand patrons for the collection.
\n6. Responsibility for Individual Material Choices
\na. Adults: The Library will not restrict, monitor, or pass judgment on any items that a
\npatron checks out. Library employees will maintain the privacy of all patrons and

\nwill not share any information about items checked out to that patron to anyone
\nother than that individual patron.
\nb. Minors: A minor is anyone under 18 years of age. Responsibility for a minor\u2019s
\nreading rests solely with the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of the minor, not with
\nthe Library. Information on items checked out to a minor may only be shared with
\na parent or legal guardian.
\nc. Further information on this responsibility can be found at the Red Feather

\n7. Deselection of Materials
\nDeselection of Library materials is an integral part of maintaining a viable, up-to-date,
\nand useful collection that caters to the community. Further information on deselection
\ncan be found at the Red Feather Mountain Library Deselection of Materials Policy.
\n8. Reconsideration of Materials
\nPatrons have the opportunity to request reconsideration of items within the Library\u2019s
\ncollection via the Library\u2019s Steps in Reconsiderations Procedure.
